The literacy model has been adopted by the Sandwich school district and last week all of the STEM English teachers attended a two day conference at the Providence Convention Center. Mrs. Debbie Morris, Mrs. Karen Sabetta, Mrs. Colleen Thomas and Mrs. Colleen Clabault were joined by Assistant Principal Mrs. Beth Hebb for the meeting. They attended several workshops on literature genre, the use of technology in ELA, the teaching of standards, and collaboration related to project based learning.
The students in Mrs. Thomas’ 8th grade English classes have an interesting display on the third floor. The project is called “Found Poetry” and the students took pages from worn out paperbacks and used them to “create new ideas and thoughtful poems.” Students covered up parts of the page to reveal new word combinations as poetry. Mrs. Thomas pointed out that the inspiration for such poetic expression comes from the Surrealists and she used this technique to help teach creative writing.
My thanks to all the parents who attended last Thursday evening’s meeting for organizing a new STEM parents group. Over 40 people attended and their enthusiastic support for the students in the STEM Academy is greatly appreciated. I will continue to cover this topic as it develops.
